Bluffing is one of the most challenging techniques of poker. It is a skill, wherein, a player deceives his opponent of having strong cards and eventually makes him fold in a game in order to win the pot. It is often considered as the riskiest gameplay.
All successful poker players might not be good bluffers. But, all good bluffers are most often successful poker players.
Even though bluffing is viewed as a risky option, it is important for a poker player to know how to effectively bluff the opponents. One can’t always depend on having good cards. You never know when you might be dealt with weaker cards. In that situation, it becomes crucial to bluff. Otherwise, you lose or fold.
To be a bona fide bluffer who never fails to deceive his/her opponent, players usually keep in mind some factors that help them in making a successful bluff.
Today, we are going to be discussing some of the prime factors that can help you make that finely deceptive bluff.
1. Your Table Image is Necessary to Bluff in Poker
Our aim, while bluffing in poker, is to make our opponent with better cards fold during the game. Your table image, in this case, plays a great role in making your opponent believe your bluff.
For example, you are a tight-aggressive player i.e. you are most likely to bet and raise. You hardly limp and play selective hands. If this is the image that your opponent has about you, perhaps, he/she will believe your bluff.
On the other hand, if you’re often limping on the table and have a passive player image for your opponents, it is quite probable that your opponent will catch your bluff.
Always keep in mind that your ultimate aim is to make your opponent fold. So, it is important to act wisely on the table.
2. Semi-Bluff When You Have a Strong Hand
The strength of your hand also matters in making your opponent believe your bluff and winning money in a poker game.
Pure bluffs that one makes when they have a hand that has almost zero chances of winning might not have great chances of winning the money.
However, semi bluffs i.e. a bluff that an opponent makes when they have a fair hand that is capable of improving on later streets improves your winning chances.
The reason why this type of bluffing is more likely to win money is that here you have two-way outs. One, if you succeed in forming a strong hand, you can win money even if your bluff fails to deceive your opponent. Two, if you succeed to bluff your opponent, you can win money even if you fail to form one of the best hands.
It is considered a back-up plan by most players that is safe enough to play.
3. Size your Bets Appropriately
Sizing of your bets also plays a crucial role when you are bluffing while playing poker. Here, the goal must be to make your bluff succeed with the least amount of chips. You should not over-bet and lose your chips or under-bet and reduce the chances of your opponent folding.
This happens a lot when one is in the game. While some players go on with their bluff for too long that they lose a huge amount of chips, there are other inexperienced players who fail to contemplate the right size of bet they must wager. This usually makes a weak bluff that doesn’t succeed while on the table.
Here is an example to understand this better:
You are in a poker game and the pot is Rs. 10,000. The flop has not come in your favor. Your opponent also checks which clearly indicates that he/she too does not have any good cards. As per the rule of thumb, you must bet 50% of the pot to make your opponent believe your bluff. However, poker is unpredictable and you must consider the situation as well. If you have a beginner or inexperienced player sitting in front of you, perhaps they might not fall for your trap. The reason being, most beginners have a habit of calling every bet as they possibly can’t judge the value of their hand. Hence, you must size your bet keeping in mind the prevailing situation.
4. Your Position on the Table
Your position on the table is yet another point that has to be considered closely if you decide to so bluff your opponent.
While bluffing, you want to observe how other players act on the table to finally make a decision i.e. whether or not you should be bluffing. Hence, bluffing from late positions is often an intelligent choice. You get to see how your opponents act and can contemplate their hand ranges, thus, acting accordingly.
However, in poker, the events are unforeseen. Every table has different players playing with different sets of skills and strategies. On that account, it might be considered a successful play to sometimes bluff in early positions when you have a fine player sitting against you. The reason being, it is quite obvious that most players bluff in late positions, and your opponent perhaps knows that too. So, when you bluff in a late position, he/she may not believe you but when you do the same from an early position he/she will believe that you have some strong hand and will probably fold.
Consequently, positions play a vital role in making your bluff in poker succeed.
These are some of the important factors that help players make successful decisions at the table that lead their opponents in folding some of their strongest hands.
Keep these tips in mind and make your game a level better.
